VA Certificate of Eligibility: Step-by-Step for Colorado Veterans and Reservists

NMLS #649445

Last reviewed: September 21, 2026

Your Certificate of Eligibility, or COE, helps a lender confirm eligibility for a VA home loan. It can also provide entitlement and funding-fee exemption information. Colorado veterans, active-duty service members, Guard and Reserve members, and eligible surviving spouses may have different document requirements.

What the COE confirms

The COE documents VA eligibility information. It does not guarantee that a lender will approve a particular loan or property. Credit, income, entitlement, appraisal and other applicable requirements still need to be reviewed.

You can begin talking with a lender before you have the certificate in hand. The lender can help identify the request route and any missing service documentation.

Three ways to request a COE

1. Through your loan officer

A lender may be able to obtain the COE electronically. Some records can be confirmed quickly; other cases require additional information or VA review. Ask what documents the lender needs and when to expect an update.

2. Through VA online

You can use VA’s official online request process. Follow the current instructions for signing in, selecting your eligibility category and supplying documents.

3. By mail when appropriate

Use VA Form 26-1880 for the standard mailed COE request. VA notes that mailed requests may take longer than online or lender requests. Surviving spouses should follow the separate instructions for their situation.

Common reasons for delays

Documents that are incomplete, do not show the required service information, or do not match the request category can lead to follow-up questions. A previous use of the VA benefit may also require a closer entitlement review. Ask your loan officer what is missing rather than repeatedly submitting the same material without clarification.

After the COE is available

Review the certificate with your lender, including entitlement and any exemption information relevant to the loan. Then confirm the remaining pre-approval or underwriting steps. Keep your planned purchase or relocation timeline in the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

No. You can start the conversation and ask for help with the request.

Can Jerry obtain it in the first call?

Some COEs are available electronically; others require additional records or VA review. Jerry can help you identify the right request path and what is needed next.
